Expect the unexpected at the Gate Lodges, five minutes by car from the main estate. These two ‘pepper pot’ follies, designed by the celebrated neoclassical architect James Wyatt, have been ingeniously extended and linked beneath the drive to create a one-bedroom cottage. Descend the stairs in the south lodge and find a drawing room with unexpectedly high ceilings, curved walls and French windows opening on to one of two private terraces. Think deep plum sofas, cow hide footstools and underfloor heating below wide oak floorboards. The kitchen is neatly built into the staircase and has all you’d expect. In the bedroom, it’s all about the king-size Hypnos bed, quirky harlequin sideboard and second private terrace.
