The Gate Lodges

Weekends from £650

Two ‘pepper pot’ follies, designed by the celebrated neoclassical architect James Wyatt.

Expect the unexpected at the Gate Lodges, five minutes by car from the main estate. Originally a gatehouse to the original estate, the lodges have been ingeniously extended and linked beneath the drive to create a one-bedroom cottage.

Descend the stairs in the south lodge and find a drawing room with unexpectedly high ceilings, curved walls and French windows opening on to one of two private terraces. Think deep plum sofas, cow hide footstools and underfloor heating below wide oak floorboards. The kitchen is neatly built into the staircase and has all you’d expect. In the bedroom, it’s all about the king-size Hypnos bed, quirky harlequin sideboard and second private terrace.

In the bathroom, discover double sinks, an indulgent bath & shower with vaulted mosaic ceiling. Outside, enjoy BBQs on the private terraces, explore the estate on Pashley bicycles or hold your own tournament on the nearby tennis court open year-round. Try your hand at paddle boarding or rowing on the serpentine lake, learn more about the nature that calls Wilderness Reserve home with our estate ecologist or practice your shot with world-class clay instructors. Wilderness Reserve is nestled in 5,000 acres across three river valleys in the county boasting some of the cleanest air in England, yet just a short drive from Suffolk’s celebrated heritage coast. Here, discover one of England’s finest piers at Southwold, enjoy famous fish & chips in Aldeburgh or make your own gin at the Adnams Brewery. For the adventurous, take to the waves in a rib from Southwold with Coastal Challenger, or visit Go Ape, Suffolk’s biggest tree top adventure.
